This was the message 7A & 7B got from Margot of the
Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) who came to the school on Friday 31st
March. She was invited by Ms Stevens to talk to the students about their
‘Ecological Footprint’.
Year 7 students are about to embark on an exciting unit of
work across several Key Learning Areas (KLAs) titled ‘Planet Earth’. Each KLA
will address this is a different way to ensure students gain a well rounded
knowledge of this area of study.
The students in 7A & 7 B went through an hour and a half
interactive session where students had to map their own personal ‘Ecological
Footprint’ using on-line learning tools, played an interactive game and
facilitated fruitful discussion about the problems facing our environment today
and beyond. Students had already watched a DVD produced by the EPA which formed
much of their background knowledge. Margot’s visit helped students to
consolidate and extend their prior learning.
So….what now? The students within their SOSE class are
deciding on action research proposals related to the environment. The outcome
of these will hopefully be some hands on work either within the school or the
wider community related to environmental protection. Make sure you ask your
children what they are learning, how they are learning it and what difference it
is making in their lives…..I think they will surprise us all!
Sally Stevens.
