Student Welfare Policy

THE COLLEGE WELFARE AND MANAGEMENT PHILOSOPHY

Members of the Hoppers Crossing Secondary College community have rights and responsibilities which are stated in the College Welfare and Management Policy.  Together we have the Responsibility to ensure that our Rights are respected and not infringed upon.

In partnership with parents, the College aims to educate in personal and social development, as well as to promote the adherence to our College values.  As part of this partnership, parents have an obligation to support the College’s efforts to produce young adults who will be responsible and productive members of society.

HOPPERS CROSSING SECONDARY COLLEGE STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

A Code of Conduct is essential if the College is to be a secure and fulfilling place for all.

bulletStudents are to work within published guidelines of our Welfare & management Policy and the Code of Conduct as administered by Staff.
bulletAll Students and other members of the College Community should work in a cooperative manner to promote social and emotional well-being, as well as intellectual development.

bulletStudents must ensure that we work in a safe, supportive environment.
bulletStudents and other members of the College Community have a right to be treated with respect and courtesy.

bullet All students have the right to learn without disruption to others.

BREACHES OF THE STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

The teacher is responsible for discipline in the classroom.  A Class Discipline Plan, reflecting the guidelines of the college Welfare and Management Policy, will be negotiated by teachers with each of their classes and include use of the Behaviour Management Plans.  The teacher is also responsible for discipline in other College environs.  The discipline measures taken will be fair and consistent and will reflect the seriousness and frequency of the misbehaviour.  The successful implementation of our Code of Conduct will only be achieved through individuals working as a team to develop a positive tone for the College.

In conjunction with the Behaviour planning process a variety of appropriate consequences will be used by teachers.  They may include:

·        A warning and reinforcement of the appropriate section of the Welfare & Management Policy.

·        Notification and/or consultation with parent/guardian, eg. Diary.

·        Detention at lunchtime or after school (To be done within Ministerial Regulations).

·        Monitoring student’s behaviour via Conduct Sheets.

·        Counselling of student by Pastoral Care Teacher, Level Co-ordinator or SWC.

·        Exclusion from certain classes for a set period of time.

·        Exclusion from all classes for set period of time (In-school Suspension).

Disciplinary action will be appropriate to the breach of the Code, and where possible will require the student to make positive and practical contributions to the College.

In cases of serious and/or continued misbehaviour, the issue will be referred to the Level Co-ordinator and when necessary to the Assistant Principal.  Where suspension is a possible outcome, parents/guardians will be informed and involved in an interview.  For extreme breaches of the Code, expulsion may result.  Both the suspension and expulsion processes will be carried out within the 1994 DE&T Guidelines.

It is important to refer to the College Welfare & Management Policy and the Guidelines for Developing the Student Code of Conduct when reading this document.
