Mr Rapisarda and some very keen Year 7 students have formed a Garden Club. The student’s aim is to beautify the school gardens to make Hoppers Crossing Secondary College a nicer place to learn. They are also making many improvements to the Horticultural centre. The students have cleaned out the shed and are paving footpaths for easier access, the horticultural centre is used for potting plants and storing gardening equipment. Students have sold potted plants to teachers to raise money for this restoration process. The garden club allows students who are interested in gardening to gain some hands-on experience in the area. It gives students opportunities to be creative and use their initiative. Click below to see some photos of the students hard at work.
Our cluster recently received two SYN Awards for ‘Best Detention Team’ (Secondary School) and ‘Best Teacher involved at SYN’ (Detention and Tours). SYN FM (Student Youth Network) is located at RMIT in Swanston St, Melbourne and has an audience of 60 000 listeners. Throughout term 3, 2006 Yr 7F students from Hoppers Crossing Secondary College have had their very own live radio show on 90.7 SYN FM. The show, called “Detention”, is on live from 12:00 to 1:00 every Thursday. Prior to each show the students prepared a running sheet, prompts for six talk segments and a playlist of 14 songs. They present the talk segments, announce the songs, give the station's ID and introduce and close their show. All this is done live to air. We have even had a senior student, Kim Tran, help operate the control panel. The students thoroughly enjoy producing and delivering their very own live radio program. It develops their literacy, self-esteem and teamwork.
