| Inside this section Curriculum at the Junior School (Years 7-9) OUR VISION – Our vision is for all students at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College to have access to high quality education, delivered by staff, who aim to challenge their students to reach their full potential. We intend to do this via providing curriculum that is contemporary, relevant, engaging and inclusive of all students. We aim for our curriculum to meet the diverse intellectual, vocational and cultural needs of all our students. The focus of junior curriculum is currently on literacy, with the recent introduction of the Independent reading program. Our college has been fortunate enough to employ the expertise of two regional literacy experts to assist us with the implementation of this program, which has been hugely successful in the United States. Current research suggests that in order to become competent readers of texts, students should read for at least 90 minutes a day, not only to gather information, but also for pleasure. Independent Reading is regular practice in reading. Students self-select books at their reading level (books they can read with 95 – 100% accuracy). Students take responsibility for working through the challenges of the text independently, while the teachers observe, acknowledge and work with individual students during Reading Conferences. The purpose of Independent Reading is to provide opportunities for students to apply reading strategies, develop fluency and build their confidence as readers; and to work on their own to improve their reading achievement. Independent reading takes place in most subject areas, but predominantly English and SOSE. Complimenting the Independent Reading Program, is the move towards more reading and writing of written texts in all subject areas. Parents are encouraged to view the links below as a means of further understanding elements of your child’s education. Should you have any enquiries regarding the Independent Reading Program or any aspects of Junior Curriculum, please contact Leisha Lowe on 9749 3611.
