Curriculum at the Senior School (Years 10-12)

It has been an exciting time for students entering the senior school at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College in 2006.  From the beginning of this year, all Year 10 students have had the opportunity to select electives across all Key Learning Areas (KLA’s).  Many new subjects have been designed to improve student engagement and to allow students to develop a pathway that has real interest for them and hence become better prepared for the rigours of Senior Secondary education.

CSI Hoppers Crossing, Working English, Celebrity Chefs, Help me get out of this place, and even Conversations with Homer Simpson are a few of the units have been designed to stretch students imagination and creativity, while at the same time developing a better understanding of the world in which they live and their roles and responsibilities therein.  This concept will also allow students to enhance their skills in a particular discipline in considerably more depth, thus leading to a better understanding of the content.

At the Year 10 level, all students will complete a unit of work focused on Work Education prior to completing a week of Work Experience from the 13th to the 16th of June.  Students and their families will then undertake a Careers Workshop with expert facilities from Careers Fast Track.  Each student will be interviewed by a career advisor, undertake testing and be provided by a personalised report highlighting different careers and courses that may be suitable for further investigation.

At VCE level, Hoppers Crossing Secondary College run a curriculum program that allows for a variety of student choice, so as to maximise student pathways in the final two years of schooling.

The school has continued to offer the opportunity for our students to become involved in Enhancement Studies, where students begin first year degrees at Melbourne, Monash or Victoria University. The benefits of this program are immense, and students who have enrolled into these courses are supported by the college with a teacher in that discipline who acts as a mentor. These Enhancement Studies as they are called, provide an opportunity for the students to experience studying at a University level and at the end of the year they will be rewarded with a bonus increment towards their final ENTER score for their VCE.

Students can also elect to study VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) and in 2006 we have a number of students participating in School Based New Apprenticeships (SBNA’s).  During these programs the students are spending two days a week away from school - one day training and one day at workplace.  In 2006 we have students studying Hairdressing, Logistics, Engineering and Office Administration.  This program coincides with the VCAL program where students will participate in activities designed to encourage education at the workplace.

In 2006 a large number of students will undertake studies in Vocational Education and Training (VET) at the VCE / VCAL level.  A number of these programs are being delivered at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College and the students have the opportunity to study a range of studies including Hospitality, Engineering, Information Technology, Multimedia and Automotive Studies.  Other students will complete their VET courses at Victoria University and local Secondary Colleges.

Students completing Year 12 in 2006 will be faced with new challenges throughout the academic year.  A comprehensive induction program into Year 12 has been conducted.  October Tests will also operate to give the students a final preparation prior to the end of year exams.  Students will be encouraged to participate in exam workshops so as to develop the skills needed to achieve the best results possible.

The re-structuring of the Senior School Curriculum at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, will provide an opportunity for all of our students to experience a wide variety of programs catering for their individual needs.  Whether it be experiencing workplace education and School Based Apprenticeships or programs designed to cater for students interested in continuing their education at a TAFE or University level.
